Home Tour : Nadine & Matthieu’s Stylish Duplex Apartment in Paris

HOME TOUR :: Apartment in Paris :: FLODEAU.COM :: 05Today is the day for a brand new Home Tour ! I haven’t blogged one in ages but when I started following Nadine and Matthieu’s photos on Instagram a few months ago, I kept thinking that we’d be lucky to get a private visit of their stylish duplex apartment in the Canal Saint Martin quarter (10th arrondissement of  the Paris). I asked and they agreed! Here are the questions I asked Matthieu about their home and the works they have done in it. As you’ll read through, you’ll realize that the place has gone through a lot of inspiring and tasteful thinking.

Thank you Nadine and Matthieu for sharing your lovely home and great tips. And congratulations on what you have achieved. God, that bathtub with the view over Paris rooftops is a dream.

Hope you all enjoy the tour…

Speak soon, xo Flo

HOME TOUR :: Apartment in Paris :: FLODEAU.COM :: 010Who ? Nadine 38, Matthieu 40, Loukha 7 and Mattia 4.

Where ? Paris, 10th arrondissement, in the Canal Saint Martin quarter

Job ? Both sollicitors

Own or rent ? Own

Since ? It happened in several steps … it was a bit of an obstacle course, so… 2002 for the main apartment on the 6th floor, 2009 for the attic rooms on the 7th floor and 2012 for the purchase of common parts on the 7th floor that were necessary to achieve the duplex apartment. But it might be over yet …

Surface ? About 120 m², distributed on the two top floors of our building.

How was the apartment when you first saw it ?

A million miles away from what it is now…! Initially we bought the 75 m² apartment on the 6th floor,  divided into a dining room, a tiny kitchen, a bathroom and two bedrooms.

But as the family was expanding, we quickly felt like we needed more space. The question was wether to sell the apartment and buy a bigger one, or try to buy attic spaces above our existing apartment.

We finally had the opportunity to buy three attic bedrooms on the 7th floor. But it was not big enough for the project that we had in mind and we had to redeem the common parts. And that’s what we did took three years later … the joys of co-ownership !

Early May 2012, we were finally able to begin the works that were completed in late August. On the 7th floor, the works were major as everything had to be created and started from scratch.

We redid the insulation, torn down the walls, created an access for a new staircase and installed roof windows. We ended up on the 7th floor with a master bedroom, dressing area and a large bathroom with a beautiful view over Paris rooftops.

The works on the 6th floor were a little ‘lighter’. There, we decide to tear down the walls to create a a large 55 m² open-space with a living room, a dinning room and a kitchen.

There was then the creation of a bedroom for each of our children, a shower room with a toilet that we managed to place under the staircase.

An extra attic room that could be connected to the 7th floor is used as storage and laundry.

Your most precious belonging(s) ?

Both have more a sentimental value rather than an actual money value. They are the Eames’ Lounge Chair from Herman Miller, a beautiful vintage piece that we found through Benjamin of The Pocket Factory and a lovely wooden and white marble cabinet by Florence Knoll that we bought from Damien of The Good Old Dayz. They were both birthday presents.

What you like least in interior design today ?

The whole ‘trendy-trends’ phenomenon that floats above decoration and interior design   – it seems a lot of people improvise themselves as professional decorators or interior designers. Most of them lack in originality and merely duplicate what’s fashionable. There is no spirit or soul in what they offer. To me, interiors have to tell stories.

Where does your interest for decoration come from ?

Let’s say that the refurbishment of our apartment allowed us to fully express our taste and passion for decoration. I think we’ve always loved beautiful objets and beautiful materials, even though our jobs or family background have never been into interior design.

HOME TOUR :: Apartment in Paris :: FLODEAU.COM :: 016By the way, just a quick story that shows how we pushed our home decoration to the detail … We were looking for electric switches and sockets for the apartment, but didn’t want to use the traditional white plastic ones that wouldn’t have matched the decoration and the style we wanted to give. We first had a look at products from Meljacbut quit on that choice as they were rather expensive and a bit over-budget. So we went ‘on a quest’ for something else but we couldn’t really find anything that we liked.

Taking advantage of the early refurbishment works at the apartment and some free time without the children, we enjoyed a romantic weekend at the Hôtel Amour in the 9th arrondissement. And there, a miracle happened! Our room had the switches we wanted. On check-out, Nadine asked where they had gotten them from and we were given the address of Heure Industrielle, a shop in the 8th arrondissement of Paris. There, we finally found the switches that sticked perfectly to the style of the apartment, a retro black bakelite model made by the brand THPG.

Your biggest pride ?

To have managed to fully achieve this project, to have succeeded in making this place faithful to our image and dreams, to have optimized the spaces that we had, all by ourselves, without the intervention of a professional, but still with the good advices of our contractor who did the works.

Your greatest embarrassment ?

Being on the top floors of our building,  we went through rough times when tearing down some walls or partitions, with chimneys and other pipes blocking the way. But in the end, we managed and survived.

Your favorite design shopping spots ?

Like many in France, we bargain-hunt on Le Bon Coin (French online classifieds website), on eBay,  sometimes at the Puces de Saint-Ouen – Clignancourt or at French or foreign flea markets. When it comes to shopping, we like to go to Fleux, Merci, Caravane, Le Bon Marché, The Conran Shop, Sentou and online shops like Made in Design and Voltex. We’re also big fans of what Moustache, Petite FritureSuper-ette, Nada Debs, Dimore Studio and Gilles et Boissier do.

Your best decoration advice ?

Do things for yourself and not for the others. Don’t try to copycat interior design magazines. At the end of the day, you’ll never feel better than in a home that reflects who you are !!

If you were given the keys to an existing architect’s house, which one would it be ?

I hesitate between three ! … the Cabanon de Roquebrune Cap Martin by Le Corbusier, for its simplicity, its extreme minimalist that goes to the essential … the Kaufmann House by Richard Neutra located in Palm Springs, for the beauty of it, the materials he used and also for the beauty of Palm Springs (an oasis in the middle of the desert) and its history … and finally the Frey House II  by Albert Frey, also located in Palm Springs, for the same reasons as above.

What do your friends say ?

We have quite a lot positive feedbacks. They frequently mention how bright the apartment is, how great we managed to optimize the spaces … some of them eventually stole some of our ideas …

What do you say ?

In view of the final result, we are happy to have persisted in our project to create that duplex apartment, whilst being complete newbies in interior design and despite some rough times and last minute surprises.
