Tel Aviv based designer Nir Chehanowski of Studio Cheha has sent me images of his astonishing 2D/3D optical illusion candle holder. Flatlight is made from a completely flat and thin brass sheet and all you need to do is place a candle on it.
“I am an artist at heart and a product designer by nature. And you will often find me exactly where you’ve found me: working in my studio! This project has been an artistic journey that began with a simple “eureka!” moment and has evolved to reveal limitless possibilities.”

Merging the 2D & 3D Worlds – “It all started with the design of simple candlestick holder, which I stripped to its most basic form. After months of playing with and drawing different prototypes, I arrived at the perfect product that combines a classic object with modern design. I looked once, I looked twice, and saw something completely new, innovative, and contemporary: The Flatlight, a candlestick that transforms into a sleek, totally flat 2D product thanks to the art of optical illusion.”

“Now this is where material meets concept. After experimenting with a range of materials for the Flatlight I arrived at my trusty friend, brass: it’s durable, it doesn’t rust, and it’s readily recycled. What’s more it can be cut using a state of the art technique called photochemical etching. This process corrosively machines away the finest details of my designs, on a piece of thin brass sheet, with the utmost precision thanks to the chemical milling process it undergoes. Unlike laser cutting, it does not create burrs or sharp edges and can be mass produced to the highest standards. And, it’s pretty neat to watch too.”

Made from 0.4mm thick brass, the Flatlight, will be available in a range of colors as well as natural brass.
